Pre-Conference Workshop
Thursday, June 12, 2025 at American University
Join us for a pre-conference workshop that offers a space for scholars to reflect on how their research, teaching, and societal impact connect and inform one another. The first session invites participants to consider their own academic paths and explore practical ways to build a stronger link between their work and real-world impact. The second session focuses on collaborative curriculum development, with opportunities to contribute to TCR's curriculum initiative and learn from senior faculty’s teaching strategies. This workshop offers a flexible, supportive environment for exchanging ideas and connecting with others interested in advancing meaningful, engaged scholarship.

Pursuing Mutually Enriching Loops Between Transformative Research, Societal Impact and Education: An Immersive, Interactive Workshop
Madhu Visnawathan
This workshop will be devoted to participants reflecting on their own journey to date and envisioning the specific loop between research, education, and social impact. It will draw from 2.5 decades of experience in symbiotic academic-social enterprise through the stream of work on subsistence marketplaces, encompassing, research, education and social enterprise through marketplace literacy. Through individual reflections, group discussion and presentations, this workshop will provide a space to reflect back on your journey and envision a path forward. The workshop will emphasize practical ways in which a mutually enriching loop between research and societal impact can be pursued.
This preconference workshop will represent a significant step forward from previous preconference workshops at TCR conferences and will be of interest to those who have attended before. Participants are welcome to join during the workshop as their travel schedule allows as the format will be flexible, consisting of self-contained parts.
Some questions that participants will consider:
-
How can my research have greater societal impact?
-
How can societal impact enrich my research?
-
How can I initiate and sustain the virtuous loop between research and societal impact?
-
How can I pursue transformative research and societal impact given practical constraints? In other words, how can I be passionate yet practical.
-
How can similar synergies be created with education?

Curriculum for Good: TCR and Teaching
Alexei Gloukhovtsev
With increased calls for societal impact through business education, TCR scholars are uniquely positioned to shape and educate the next generation of managerial leaders. As the demand for more socially responsible business practices grows, so does the need for business education that integrates these values into curricula. To meet this need, the TCR website hosts an expanding repository of teaching materials, syllabi, case studies, and innovative teaching practices.
In this interactive workshop, junior scholars will have the opportunity to bring their unique perspectives and experiences to the table, engaging in discussions to shape and contribute to TCR’s ongoing curriculum development initiative. Through collaborative brainstorming and feedback, participants will help refine educational strategies that foster the next generation of leaders capable of making a positive societal impact.
Additionally, the workshop will feature a panel discussion with more senior faculty members who will share insights and effective strategies for teaching complex topics related to societal impact. This conversation will provide valuable guidance on classroom teaching techniques and the collaboration and tensions between teaching and research, especially for those at “balanced” institutions
Together, these activities will help create an interactive learning experience for all attendees and contribute to the evolution of business education that benefits consumer welfare and quality of life.
